During the growth of the sugar cane, the polymer is initially carbon negative. The amount of captured carbon is almost equivalent to the amount of carbon expended when using oil-based polymers, which means the benefit to the environment is huge.
It’s also worth noting that sugar cane polymers are a renewable resource and don’t deplete fossil fuels, unlike their oil-based counterparts, which again is of enormous environmental benefit.
Sugar cane based polythene has a number of uses. It can be used to create bags, covers, tubes, films, wraps and stretch film, which means there are a wide variety of functions to which it can be applied.
Once the shrink film reaches the end of its useful life, it can be recycled in the UK using existing recycling streams.

]]>The post What’s better – Plastic or cardboard packaging? appeared first on Liberty Packaging Systems.
]]>While cardboard is made from timber, which is a renewable resource, cardboard contributes far more greenhouse gases than their plastic equivalents and take substantial amounts of energy to make. By contrast, plastic is light, durable, recyclable and its manufacture is generally not particularly energy intensive.
Let’s take shrink-wrap packaging specifically, it has countless advantages over cardboard packaging mainly being cheaper, quicker, less effort to use and is environmentally friendly. Although cardboard can be printed on and cut to different shapes, cardboard is a dated technology and is non-water proof which makes shrink-wrap packaging a preferable choice for protecting products.

Did you know shrink wrapping has proven to be between 50% and 75% more cost effective and cheaper than cardboard. Much of this saving is gained in the materials used alone. The shrink-wrap process is faster than using cardboard. Modern shrink wrapping machines such as LPS’s WrapMatic make the task of wrapping anything from meat to mechanical parts easier than ever before. Shrink wrapping machines are an affordable solution and can easily be used in-house and where space is limited.
Shrink wrapping saves space as less packaging is used. Warehouse space is maximised with little or no “dead space” around the product that has been packed. Using less of a packaging material that is cheaper than cardboard saves even more money.
There is a continued growth in modern plastics such as biodegradable shrink wrap and LPS supply compostable film made from waste potatoes. The technology behind the materials and the fact that far less is used make shrink-wrap a greener solution than many imagine, with a smaller carbon footprint that cardboard in many cases.
In summary, Shrink-wrap packaging has countless advantages over cardboard packaging. Plastic packaging outperform paper-based packaging environmentally – on manufacturing, on reuse, and on solid waste volume and generation.
The cost of an entry level shrink wrap machine is low, the cost of shrink film (of which less is used) is low and the fact shrink-wrapping products can be completed in-house saves outsourcing costs.
The argument for plastic over cardboard will continue in years to come and there is room for both in the packaging market. However, what’s most important is that they can both be recycled and kept out of our seas. Recycling and reusing both types of packaging has proven to be the most effective way to minimise carbon footprint and protect the environment.

]]>What’s great about the compostable packaging film is that it is certified as fully home compostable. This means it can be easily disposed of with food waste, garden compost or in green council recycling bins. It is also completely biodegradable and contains no oil based materials, plastics or harmful toxins.

compostable packaging film
Compostable packaging film is made, disposed of and breaks down in a manner that is kinder to the environment than recyclable plastic. It is made from plant-based, recycled materials and can return to earth quickly and safely as soil when disposed of in the right environmental conditions.
Our compostable packaging film is used for bagging items such as food and magazines to secure them in a waterproof, tamper-resistant manner.
The major benefits to the environment are that compostable packaging film requires less carbon to produce, reduces the amount of waste sent to landfill, reduces levels of pollution in the air, groundwater and soil and provides the earth with life-promoting nutrients. On top of this it helps to conserve resources by reducing the amount of new/virgin materials needed to make packaging.
Three-quarters of shoppers across Europe prefer to buy products with environmentally friendly packaging, according to a 2018 research from leading data provider IRI. That’s already a significant amount of customers and the figure is only likely to increase as younger generations are educated in an era of increased environmental awareness.
Although compostable packaging film cost a little more than standard wrapping film, taking a pro-active action on climate change sees a higher return on investment than those who do not. This is mainly due to the fact that companies who use compostable packaging film improve their brand image and provide a competitive advantage against others that are not so sustainable.
The UK exports 70% of its paper and 66% of its plastic for recycling, with no idea if it actually gets recycled. China has recently banned imports of household plastics due to food contamination so it ends up in incineration or landfill because it can’t be recycled. With British fields in decline, compostable packaging film returns vital nutrients to the soil, and has the added benefit of improving soil structure, reducing the risk of floods.
The UK Plastic Pact, introduced in April 2018 aims for businesses to reduce the total amount of plastic packaging. One target is to make 70 per cent of packaging recycled or composted by 2025. Our compostable packaging film is ‘OK compost HOME’ certified, and as councils continue to improve composting facilities, compostable packaging film can be added to garden waste or food waste after it’s been used.
These positive traits of compostable packaging film means it is an invaluable packaging source. Although it is in its infancy, the benefits of compostable packaging film means demand for this highly sought after packaging material is continuing to grow and this will only become more valuable in the future.
If you would like to find out more about our compostable packaging film or purchase online click here or to receive a quote, please call us on 01992 460 111 or email info@libertypackagingsystems.co.uk. We also have a wide range of wrapping machines that work with compostable packaging film and printers that can print addresses and data on to compostable packaging film.

As a UK leading supplier of shrink wrap machines, Liberty Packaging Systems know there are many benefits to using shrink wrap ranging from aesthetics to practical purposes and the fact it is used globally around the world supports this. We have listed some of the benefits below but firstly – what is shrink wrap?
Shrink wrap is a well known lightweight and environmentally friendly plastic film used for packaging contents, whereby a sheet made from plastic or ‘polyolefin’ is wrapped fully around an item by a shrink wrap machine. With applied heat from the shrink wrap machine the plastic ‘shrinks’ around the enclosed item, wrapping it tightly and neatly. The top 10 benefits of using shrink wrap include:
Before a shrink wrap machine applies heat, the shrink wrap film is soft and quiet, unlike crinkly PVC, and after the machine applies heat, the shrink film is soft to the touch, not brittle and rigid. This versatility is key, the ability to contain irregular or non-uniform shaped items at high speed.
It utilizes space, crucial for large warehouses and mass storage, many items can be wrapped together – just think of the space saved by shrink wrapping drinks bottles rather than cardboard boxes of bottles.
It is now more environmentally friendly, as it is easily recyclable and is cheaper than alternatives such as carton or wrapping paper it also means it reduces packing costs by 50%.

It is more pliable than alternatives such as PVC, and does not become yellow or brittle with time.
Polyolefin’s clear transparent nature means products can be observed and checked without the need to unpack and reseal, saving valuable processing time. The glossy finish to it means it has a professional and attractive appearance, valuable for products requiring consumer pleasing.
It is also much lighter than alternative wrapping, which has knock on effects with regards to transportation and shipping costs. The benefits of shrink wrap means it is one of the most widely used wrapping materials globally.
It is chemically inert, contains no toxins or coloration, thus meaning it is perfect for wrapping consumable food and beverages, pharmaceuticals and body care products. No harmful vapours or nasty smells are released during the heat sealing process either.
By design it also means it is completely sealed, with complete protection from the outside world. Puncture-proof protection, non-tearable and hardy. This keeps your products safe and sound, with any intrusion or opening easily identifiable.

It is very durable – once wrapped, the item is secure and stable and remains in perfect condition.
Shrink wrap is waterproof! Items are protected from harsh weather or clumsy spillages, from accidental tears, bumps and knocks.
These positive traits of shrink wrap means it is an invaluable packaging source that is well used and competitive in nature. The benefits of shrink wrap mean it is a highly sought after packaging material that will only become more valuable in the future. This makes a shrink wrap machine an ideal investment when looking to use shrink wrap for your packaging needs.

]]>Almost all Polyolefin is recyclable, but by far the biggest environmentally friendly advantages of this multi-purpose plastic innovation is that it increases the shelf life of food products. By preventing oxygen from reaching inside, the rate of decomposition is severely reduced than if the item was loose. This also results in fewer deliveries and fewer resources needed such as water and land use.
Wrapping any item in a clear, tamper-resistant manner also enables customers to see exactly what they are purchasing and protects them from external contamination that could occur during production or transportation. Once again waste is reduced and damage is kept to a minimum. As such there is no better alternative to using shrink wrap for the transportation, presentation and security of food which also offers an array of environmental benefits.

]]>Plastic packaging is becoming increasingly recognized for its contributions to sustainability. The very nature of plastics – lightweight yet strong – makes them ideal for all sorts of packaging and helps minimize the environmental impact of the packaging. Polyolefin is a strong clear film that can provide a protective layer to heavy items and doesn’t break down if used for heat-sealing packaging.
Why use Polyolefin film to wrap products?
As the packaging market continues to grow, so does the shift towards lightweight, environmentally friendly and efficient packaging. Polyolefin and shrink film can be used for a variety of packaging reasons – when multiple items need to be presented in an appealing, tamper-resistant manner, when products need to be secured for transportation or even just to keep food fresh for longer. Did you know wrapped cucumbers last 3 times as long as unwrapped ones? This also means less frequent deliveries and less waste.
